The First FDA-Approved CRISPR Treatment

CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) is a technology used by scientists to modify the DNA of living organisms. It acts as a precise molecular scissor that can cut DNA sequences. In the field of medicine, while its potential for revolutionizing genetic disease treatment has been talked about for the past few years, there was no CRISPR-based treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, in December 2023, the FDA approved CRISPR-based gene therapy and CRISPR Therapeutics for the treatment of sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia, making it the first FDA-approved CRISPR treatment. This treatment was also approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the U.K. To learn more, read- https://www.labiotech.eu/trends-news/casgevy-crispr-uk-approval/
